Korean-medicine scientists view prostatitis as the results of dissolute sex life, intemperate life, excessive drinking and overeating. In that case, the liver dysfunctions and also ‘Seup-Yeol (fever caused by clamminess)’ develops. These issues result in hypofunction of the lungs and kidneys. Prostatitis easily comes out in these conditions.

Other causes of prostatitis are unsanitary sexual intercourse (either oral or vaginal), controlling ejaculation, sexual continence, excessive masturbation, out of control stress which lead to immune disorders, which are closely related to prostatitis, and exercise that applies pressure to the perineal region (between the anus and genitals), such as biking and riding, which excessively congests the prostate.

Prostatitis is closely related to the liver, kidneys, and bladder. When these organs get out of order functionally, prostatitis shows up. In traditional Korean medicine, prostatitis is defined as the case where the bladder gets out of order in energy circulation because ‘Seup-Yeol’ (bad energy) flows from the hypogastrium into the bladder or ‘Sin-Gi (the vital energy that runs through the kidney)’ gets weak. Urine can be easily ejected only when vital energy and blood are smoothly circulated through the kidney and the hypogastrium. Otherwise, ‘Seup-Yeol’ invades the hepatic pathway and fever develops in the bladder. Subsequently, prostatic diseases develop.

In traditional Korean medicine, prostatitis is called ‘Yo-Tak (urinary turbidness)’, ‘Im-Byeong (similar to gonorrhea)’, ‘San-Byeong (hypogastric pain)’ and ‘Go-Byeong (toxic disease)’. As previously stated, it is said that prostatitis develops when vital energy cannot run smoothly through the hypogastric or perineal regions, or when injurious energy invades the hepatic pathway. Consequently, prostatitis can be fundamentally treated only if the prostate-related organs are well managed so that vital energy may run smoothly and injurious energy may be eliminated from the body. Added to this, dietotherapy and exercise are of great help to treatment.
